A change in speed is caused by acceleration. A change in direction is also caused by acceleration. Which choice is left.

To add to the answers above, velocity is a vector, and acceleration is a change in velocity, it can be a change in magnitude or direction. Balanced forces only cause the object to have a resultant force of 0, which doesn't provide acceleration.
