From what look up: 1) Maria may have been formed by ancient volcanic eruptions that filled in low lying areas of the moon with darker basalt. However, they could also arise due to a cataclysmic impact from a small asteroid that punctured the lunar mantel causing magma to spew over the face of the moon. Both of these events would have occurred during a time when the Moon's core was still hot. 2) Craters are impact zones where large to small meteors have impacted the moon's surface but did not puncture the lunar mantel or occurred after a time when the moon's corr had significantly cooled.
