What is the rate of growth?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

x F(x) 0 22.00 1 21.56 2 21.13

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@mathstudent55 Can you help?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Graph the points and then find the slope..It is the same

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@sleepyjess

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Well this is interesting... it goes from the starting point, then up, then down...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

This is decreasing, right? But I don't know why the question asks the growth rate for this.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Do you know how to explain this?

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Growth Rate? So I guess we're thinking of this in terms of an exponential function. So we'll take the second amount, and divide it by the original starting amount. That will tell us how much it grew/shrunk by.\[\Large\rm \frac{21.56}{22.00}=0.98\]

zepdrix (zepdrix):

So we're left with 98% of the original amount after x changes by 1.

zepdrix (zepdrix):

If we wanted to write the equation for this, it would be something like,\[\Large\rm y=22(0.98)^x\]

zepdrix (zepdrix):

So it looks like it's actually SHRINKING by 2% each time, ya?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes that was exactly what I was thinking. So the rate of change is 98%?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I mean sorry

zepdrix (zepdrix):

I guess we would say that ummmmmm

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So it is not 2%?

zepdrix (zepdrix):

Ahh the wording is so weird >.< So like.. we're left with 98% of the previous amount each time. But our growth rate? I guess our growth rate is -2%, right? :o Mmmm thinkingggg

Ok thank you for the help though :)
