Tantalus was a mythological figure in Greek culture who was doomed to Tartarus for eternity, basically the worst place in hell. His punishment was to be on an island with water around it and a fruit tree. When ever he reaches out for a fruit, the fruit stays out of his grasp, and when he tries to drink, the water sinks away.
