in a compound sentence does the sentence must have a linking word of any sort? or can it be linked by a comma? Please back up answer, or with website

so your saying the only time a compound sentence can only be linked by a comma if has a independent clause separated by a conjunction, but now what about a complex sentence cause i know they are separated by commas also
