There has to be more to the question. A representation of the opposite independent or dependent part of the question.

On Mondays, Elise takes the shortest route to work and on Fridays, she takes the longest route. The longer the route Elise takes to work, the more gas she uses.

I would say neither the route she takes is independent and the gas is dependent

First you should know that all the statements should have a matching right?
So since number of working hours is not mentioned in the statement we can take it as neither independent or dependent
it is clear that gas consumption is dependent on the route she takes thus - dependent variable
now consider this if you are given that today is monday you know that she's gonna take the shortest path so that itself says that the distant is dependent on the time. Thus the time is independent variable
Also it is clear that distance is the the variable that decides the amount of gas. so if distant and gas consumptions are concerned gas is dependent while distant is independent
So distant is at once becomes independent while on other time dependent.
