what happened when narvaez and his men met appalatche indians
Narváez showed the same European arrogance many Spanish and others did when making first contact. The first Apalachee village he got to had about 40 buildings. He thought this must be the biggest city around and took it. Some Indians were killed but enough got away to let the rest of the Apalachee nation know that they had an idiot infestation. They attacked the Spanish the next day and burned some houses, They attacked the day after that too. | The Spanish still wouldn't go away so the switched to guerrilla tactics. They harassed the Spanish every where they went. Apalachee bowmen could get off 5 or 6 arrows while Narváez men were reloading. By then, the archers had faded away, headed to the next quick attack. Narváez couldn't find any gold or other plunder so he headed south across a swamp. They heard there was food on the other side. In their arrogance, they figured crossing a swamp in armor, with horses would be a great idea.It wasn't. They got bogged down and became even easier targets for the Apalachee. When they got to the other side, the folks there had abandoned and burned the village. There was enough crop in the fields to feed them a little. And they had left Apalachee territory. But it had been a bad beginning of a disastrous expidetion.
