to find how far away a lightning flash is, a rough rule is the following: "Divide the time in seconds between the flash and the sound by three. The result equals the distance in km to the flash". Justify this.

compare the speeds of lightening and sound as they travel toward you. light is pretty instantaneous, sound travels at c 330 m/s.
