How is hardness defined when identifying minerals?

hardness is identified by the minerals ability to scratch and to be scratched. (can it scratch other objects or minerals or can it be scratched by other minerals.)
OpenStudy (e.mccormick):
They ususally use the mohs scale for harness. This is a comparitive scale where the buy tried rubbing things together to see what scratched what ahd determoined several key items at different hardness steps. http://www.amfed.org/t_mohs.htm
