The article showed citizens how Cuba and Spain were working together to destroy the United States. Yellow journalists provided citizens with a detailed, unbiased account of the U.S.S. Maine sinking. Yellow journalists spun the events of the U.S.S. Maine to incite anger among the public. The article depicted the U.S. president as a weak, spineless man who would not retaliate against Spain.

These developments resulted in much higher casualty rates that in the past because these new weapons were more destructive and allowed for larger scale military actions to take place. Also arguably these types of weapons and other military advancements at this time led to increases in the size of armies.
