If you only have 3quart pitcher and a 5quart pitcher how can you measure exactly 1 quart?

humm...

OpenStudy (anonymous):

1- Fill up the 3 quart pitcher. 2- Pour the contents of the 3 quart pitcher into the 5 quart pitcher. 3- Refill the 3 quart pitcher. 4- Fill the 5 quart pitcher from the contents of the 3 quart pitcher. 5- The remainder in the 3 quart pitcher is 1-quart.

OpenStudy (phi):

How about fill 5, pour into 3 ( leaves 2 in 5, 3 in 3) empty the 3 (leaves 2 in 5, 0 in 3) pour the 2 in the 5 into the 3 (leaves 0 in 5, 2 in 3) fill the 5 (leaves 5 in 5, 2 in 3) fill the 3 from the 5 (leaves 4 in 5, 3 in 3) empty the 3 (leaves 4 in 5, 0 in 3) fill the 3 from the 5 (leaves 1 in 5, 3 in 3) not guaranteed to be the fastest way, but it works.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i got it in my mind tho

OpenStudy (phi):

yes, the fastest way is molly's fill 3, pour into 5 (leaves 0 in 3 , 3 in 5) fill 3 and fill 5 (leaves 1 in 3, 5 in 5)
