how to compute percentages

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

do you have an example problem ?

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

there is a percent formula : is/of = %/100

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

lets say you have a problem such as : 30% of what is 100 ? percent formula : is/of = %/100 is = 100 of = x % = 30 now we sub into the formula and make a proportion 100/x = 30/100 like with any proportion, you cross multiply and solve for x 30x = 10000 x = 10000/30 x = 333.333 so 30% of 333.333 is 100 that is just one example...it can also work for problems such as : what is 20% of 100 just be sure and follow the formula and put the numbers in the right spot.

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

or do you mean problems such as : turn 4/5 into a percent ??

OpenStudy (texaschic101):

if that is the case, what I do is first divide and turn it into a decimal 4/5 = 0.8....then you can either move the decimal 2 spaces to the right, giving us 80%, or you can multiply by 100 --- 0.8 * 100 = 80%

thank a lot makes sense now
