PLEASE HELP The No-Crash Rental Company says the total cost to rent a dump truck can be found using the equation y = 45x + 75, where x represents the number of days that the truck is rented. Please answer these questions: 1. What does the 45 represent in this equation? 2. How much would it cost to rent a truck for 5 days? Please show or explain how you got your answer. 3. How many days could I rent the truck for a total of $480? Please show or explain how you got your answer.

OpenStudy (phi):

any ideas ?

OpenStudy (phi):

can you do question 2. ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

well for the first one i thought that 45 represents of how many days to rent to truck but im not sure if thats right and im lost with 2 and 3

OpenStudy (phi):

the equation is a recipe to find the cost to rent the truck they tell you x is the number of days. if you multiply the number of days by 45 you get the cost (after adding an extra 75)

OpenStudy (phi):

for example, if you rent the truck for 1 day, you replace x with 1 (think of x as placeholder for where to put the 1) 45 * 1 + 75 ist the cost.

OpenStudy (phi):

to do question 2. , you can use that same idea with x= 5 days

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it would be 45 * 5 + 75 ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

for the second one ?

OpenStudy (phi):

yes, but simplify to get a single number

OpenStudy (phi):

remember order of operations, do multiply first

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so for number 2 it would be 300 then ?

OpenStudy (phi):

yes

OpenStudy (phi):

btw, the answer for 1. is 45 is the cost per day to rent the truck the 75 is "one-time charge"

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thats what i figured but wasn't sure

OpenStudy (phi):

for 3. start with the equation y = 45x + 75 look at the question How many days could I rent the truck for a total of $480? where does the 480 go in the equation ?

OpenStudy (phi):

remember, it says the total cost to rent a dump truck can be found using the equation y = 45x + 75 what does "y" represent ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wouldn't it represent $480 ?

OpenStudy (phi):

yes. when they say "total cost" can be found using y = 45x+75 they are saying y is the total cost for 3. , they tell you the total cost is 480 use that for y, and write 480 = 45x + 75 to "find x" or "solve for x" I would first add -75 to both sides and simplify. what do you get ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thank you you been a really big help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and i got nine BTW
