How long will it take Carlos to walk 9 miles if he is walking 3 mph?

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

What do you think?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

maybe 3 hours

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

Okay, that is correct, but do you know why/how?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

umm do you divide 9 and 3

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

He walks 3 miles in 1 hour. He walks 6 miles in 2 hours. We are just adding 3 miles each hour, so he walked 9 miles in 3 hours

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

For numbers that don't go into each other, such as 4 and 9, you would divide 9/4

OpenStudy (anonymous):

oh okay thanks for explaining it

OpenStudy (sleepyjess):

No problem :)
