consider this situation as the starting point of a story : it is late at night, and A young boy tries to steal the purse of an old woman as she walks home. is there anything original or unusual about this situation? if this were just a crime story, the answer would be '' no '' but author Langeton Hughes turns an attempted mugging into a short story that shows how one woman demonstrates her generosity, kindness, And compassion to a troubled boy. '' thanks you , M'am '' is a memorable an moving story about two characters,Mrs. Luella bates Washington Jones an roger, who are both far more complex an surprising than most readers ever expect.from the very beginning of the story , Mrs Jones Surprises readers. Rather than Allowing herself to be the victim of the mugging, she resists roger an turns the tables on him. She takes charge. she kicks roger in the seat of his pants and hold him tightly so that he cannot run away. she then yells at the boy for what he has tried to do and brings him back to her home.this is certainly not what most readers would expect from an old woman . Mrs Jones 's Behavior indicates that she is not only Physically strong, but that she also has a Strong character . she is clearly not a person who will bring back down from any challenge or problem. readers are immediately interested to see what she will do with roger and wonder why she is bringing him home with her. however, as surprising as the behavior of Mrs.Jones is, Roger's Behavior is Equally unexpected. Most readers would suppose that a young person who is daring and thoughtless enough to attempts to rob an old woman would be brash an rude. At the very least,Readers expect Rogers to be unafraid of a woman like Mrs.Jones . however , When Mrs.Jones fights back against roger, he is quite Frightened an timid. he even begs Mrs.Jones to let him go. he says, '' i just want you to turn me loose ,'' as she drags him down the street. by the time Mrs.Jones brings roger Back to her Apartment, it was clear that she is in total control of the situation. readers now want to see how this odd pair Behaves as the story progresses.the unusual nature of both characters has captured reader attention fully.in Mrs. Jones Apartment ,the characters continue to act in unexpected and surprising ways.one might assume that Mrs.Jones Brings roger with her to lecture him or punish him for what he has done, but she instead offers to make him dinner. rather than tell him that she would never do anything as Shameful as what roger has done, Mrs.Jones Admits that she too has done things of witch she is not proud. this confession not only makes readers realize how honest Mrs.Jones is, it Also has an impact on roger. because Mrs.Jones shows that she trust him, roger Behaves not as a thief , but like a young man who deserves to be trusted. he does not steal from her purse when Mrs.Jones back is turned, And he Even offers to go to the store to do some shopping for Mrs.Jones. Mrs.Jones pride and dignity affect roger. they make him behave better. By the End of '' thank you M'am ,'' readers have had nearly every Expectation they held about Roger and Mrs.Jones Proven to be incorrect. the woman who seems as if she would be an Easy Target an likely victim turns out to be a strong and generous figure who refuses to judge others. the heartless thief who preys on seemingly defenseless individuals turn out to be a scared And Neglected young person in need of Guidance. By showing that these Characters Are so different from how they first appear to be, Author Langston Hughes reminds readers what Strength really is and That people should never be judges on Appearances only.
