Well to begin the chinese instituted a policy of seclusion due to the fact they did not want to get involved in the outside world believing that the rest of the world were merely savagaes and brutes so they did not trade or involve themselves with any other nations but this angered the europeans who were well known for their mercantile nature due to the fact that they wanted access to the many luxurious goods of china for example silk and spices. they also wanted to send the chinese their goods to gain money for example when the europeans exposed the chinese to opium. so a reason to become imperalistic would be to gain more resources, and capital having other nations under your control and to open up trade with other empires to increase economic growth.
