OpenStudy (leahc246):

During the election of 1860, Abraham Lincoln This one's a bit tricky but: A. Defeated a strong Democratic opponent. He received some (although minimal) votes from both the North and South and Lincoln made no strong promises supporting the abolition of slavery at the time of the campaign. "In the face of a divided opposition, the Republican Party, dominant in the North, secured a majority of the electoral votes, putting Abraham Lincoln in the White House with almost no support from the South" Wikipedia. The Emancipation Proclamation Issued by President Lincoln The Proclamation did not necessarily start the war, it was a mix of multiple factors. It was certainly not supported by the Southern states! "The Emancipation Proclamation didn't actually free all of the slaves. Since Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation as a military measure, it didn't apply to border slave states like Delaware, Maryland, Kentucky and Missouri" ( http://www.history.com/news/5-things-you-may-not-know-about-lincoln-slavery-and-emancipation) The answer must be D )prompted by the Dred Scott decision.
