OpenStudy (matt101):

If it has 6 protons, it will have 6 electrons. Since this atom isn't an ion (I'm assuming), it is in its ground state and so its net charge is 0. Protons have positive charges and electrons have negative charges, so you need an equal number of each so that all charges cancel. Neutrons, as the name implies, are uncharged.
