Jane filled one transparent bottle and one brown bottle of the same capacity with pond water. She kept the first bottle in sunlight and the second in dark. After one hour she calculated the amount of oxygen present in both the bottles. What will be her observation?
The transparent bottle will have a higher oxygen content in comparison to the brown bottle which will have a lower oxygen content. This is because direct sunlight will help promote photosynthesis in the plants and microorganisms captured in the bottles. Direct sunlight is needed to stimulate the light reactions in order for the dark reactions to occur and complete photosynthesis. When light is impaired, in this case the bottle is darkened, sunlight does not directly stimulate photosynthesis as effectively as something that is obscured.
