A biologist wants to estimate the median width of over 200 oak trees in a forest. Ten trees were selected at random, and their widths, in centimeters, were recorded. 63, 59, 12, 43, 71, 35, 28, 52, 47, 26 What is the estimated median width of all oak trees in the forest?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i think 9

OpenStudy (anonymous):

anyone else??

OpenStudy (acxbox22):

put the numbers into order then slect the number in the direct middle middle=median

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i did that @acxbox22

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and i found the middle, which was 43 and 47

OpenStudy (anonymous):

i added 43 and 47 and divided it by 10 and got 9, am i right?? @inowalst @iambatman @iknowplaces13 @leonardo0430 @breelovee

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@acxbox22

OpenStudy (leonardo0430):

no, what you just did was find the mean, to find the median you must first rearange the numbers from smallest to largest, then count how many numbers there are, there are 10 numbers in total, the number in the middle would be.........................

OpenStudy (anonymous):

43 and 47

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there is no exact middle

OpenStudy (anonymous):

dont u have to add them both and divide it by the number of numbers which is 10

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and then get 9 as a result

OpenStudy (leonardo0430):

why 9 and not 10?

OpenStudy (leonardo0430):

oh in that case yes you are correct :)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

okay, thx
