Plz help need explanation

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (amistre64):

its a rather basic mathical process. not sure what there is to explain. do you recall what an absolute value is?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

its the distance of a number from zero right?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

in a sense yes. we can regard the absolute value of a real number as its distance away from zero.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok so can you help explain how to solve the problem :D

OpenStudy (amistre64):

that was the explanation ....

OpenStudy (amistre64):

how far is -9/16 away from zero?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ohhhh i get it so its like polar opposite right?

OpenStudy (amistre64):

polar opposite is kind of ok to think of, but lets say we had: |3| the solution is not -3, its just 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

my answer would be +9/16

OpenStudy (amistre64):

correct, |-9/16| = 9/16

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks :D i get it now haha

OpenStudy (amistre64):

the solution to an absolute value is to ignore the sign :)

OpenStudy (amistre64):

good luck
