s this an essay question or something because this could have a lot of answers, haha. Some people say Reagan played a massive role in ending the Cold War in proving that the "missile gap" between the USSR and US was actually the other way around by outgunning the Soviets through his "Star Wars" program. Otherwise, the USSR kind of self-destructed in a lot of ways.

Like @morganthomas said, there are a lot of answers here.  Reagan beefing up the military after Carter downsized it, the U.S. economy was doing a lot better than that of the Soviet's (Capitalism v Communism), essentially the Soviet economy was no longer able to keep up with the U.S.
