In the two similar trapezoids below, HE = 20, what is DA?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I believe its ten!

OpenStudy (bibby):

find the scale factor first

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How do you do that?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@bibby?

OpenStudy (bibby):

in similar polygons, corresponding sides are in the same proportion. set up a ratio I used this http://www.wolframalpha.com/input/?i=%2810x%29%2F30%3D56%2F%2842x%29 found x =2 plug that back in and you see that GF is 20 and CB is 30 20y=30 solve for y and find our scale factor

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Did it! I believe the answer is 40? If I did it corrrectly

OpenStudy (bibby):

uhhh let's see, the scale factor is 30/20 which is 3/2 which is 1.5

OpenStudy (bibby):

if HE is 20 then DA is 20*1.5

OpenStudy (anonymous):

30?

OpenStudy (bibby):

yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Ok, thank you!:)

OpenStudy (bibby):

disclaimer, im drunk and tired so work it out for yourself to make sure that's right

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Drunk?????? oh god.. lol

OpenStudy (bibby):

heck yeah adult lyfe maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaan

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How old are you?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

#irresponsibleadultlife;)

OpenStudy (bibby):

22 anyhow you can kinda check it because we found that GF was 20, right? the corresponding length on the 2nd polygon is 30

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Is that you in your profile picture?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I did! The correct answer is 30!

OpenStudy (bibby):

nope, I found him here sweeeet
