An observer on the North Pole sees the Moon as shown below. What moon phase will she observe approximately one week later?

Moon phases always go right-to-left. Thus, in this case, the darkness should spread and we have a waning moon. Your question is this, when, exactly does that first quarter happen? If it is the middle of the two-week (approx.) cycle, there will be no moon at all in a week (or so.) What say you?
