It is a bit more than spreading everywhere evenly. In fact, it is almost never even. Diffusion is a process where a gas or liquid comes to an even concentration across a closed system. This is due to the molecules of the gas or liquid hitting and rebounding off each other; it is a random process. Now, if you have more molecules packed together wouldn't they have a higher chance of hitting each other than if the molecules are spread out evenly and as distance to each other as possible? What do we say if there is a lot of something in a container compared to another container with less? It is more concentrated. Does that help?
