If I may join in..., remember *faltar* follows the same pattern as *gustar*.

*Nos gustAN los lápices.* (= "THEY ARE pleasing to us")
*Nos faltAN los lápices.* (= "THEY ARE missing to us")

Because *los lápices* ("the pencils") is the subject, and it equals to "they" (*ellos*), you know the verb ending needs to be the one corresponding to "they"
