Can someone explain how the moon affects the Earth's water?

OpenStudy (irishboy123):

moon pulls water toward it (and vice versa, of course). this creates tides. not waves, but tides. friction between water and earth slows earth and leads to moon drift - conservation of momentum/angular momentum.
