Suppose that license plates in a certain municipality come in two forms: (1) two letters (A ... Z) followed by four digits (0 ... 9) or (2) three letters followed by three digits. How many different license plates are possible?

for one you do 26*26*10^4 for two you do 26^3*10^3
The reason why and how you get those answer is by simple reasoning. There are 26 letters in the alphabet and you need two letter out of 26 for (1) and there are 9 digits and you need four of any starting from 0 to 9.
