All the sides are the same, so we set up this equation:
2x - 5 = x + 3

Subtract 'x' to both sides first.

Okay, well use opposite operations to get x isolated.
Subract x from the right side, giving you now x - 5 = 3
Now add 5 to the other side, giving you x = 8
