Explain the differences between the vertical and horizontal methods used to combine or simplify polynomials.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

In vertical simplification of polynomials, you use the FOIL method and multiply each of the terms in the parenthesis by each of the other terms. For the horizontal method, you do it in a way similar to simple multiplication of numbers, with one on top of the other and multiplying each term by each of the terms in the other set of parenthesis.
