A makes the most sense. But Why? Well, The term people refers to an individual standpoint. Small local businesses. They want to maximize their profit. They really wouldn't be interested in foreign trade or anything like that. A is the best logical choice. And I think that is what would be said in a Human Geography or economics textbook.

Most democracy are interested in the rights and prosperity of peoples as individuals.We can eliminate B, because a corporation will always be focused on profit. and we can eliminate D because democratic societies don't want some people to be more powerful in others (By definition. though we all know that's not always the case.) A can be eliminated because it is irrelevant to the quote. The buyer is not a part of the quote, only the worker. So the answer would be?

Exactly! :) Remember, when Democracy is mentioned, it is a society that regards all peoples as equal in controlling the government (By voting usually) Even though there are elected officials that make the decision in the long run!
