"taxes is how the government is financed. period. taxes have been collected since before the invention of writing, as shown in cuniform tablets from Persia, and hieroglyphics in Egypt. the government spends money and buys services just like any other sector of the economy. in fact in the modern consumer based economy any organization that employs people is a factor in the economy, what they make is inconsequential. the government can be considered a bundler of funds for the common good. for example can you afford an army to prevent the invasion, pillage of your towns and rape of your women by another country? i didn't think so. Private industry was incapable of raising the funds to build Grand Coulee Dam which is the largest electrical generating station in north America. But because the government used the public funds, we have that electricity which has been a boost to industry and the economy. and because of electric sales, paid for itself. For 200 years the government postal service connected people to goods from the likes of Sears and Roebuck and eBay. because of that both industry and people receive a benefit. the idea that life would be great if every person lived like a hermit is ridiculous. Humankind needs community to thrive. What is important is that there be no taxation without representation. that keeps the process focused on the common good."
