Given figure PQRS ~ figure TUVW, what is the value of b? yd

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Will give fan and Medal

OpenStudy (anonymous):

9.6 x 3

OpenStudy (anonymous):

28.8

OpenStudy (anonymous):

28.8 is the answer

OpenStudy (matt101):

These are similar triangles, meaning to go from one triangle to the other, you multiply each side by the same factor. This means the RATIO between the same two sides from both triangles will be the same (e.g. one will always be 3 times longer than the other, no matter what their actual length is). So: \[{b \over 1.3}={9.6 \over 3.9}\] Solve for b and you have your answer!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yes would you like me to explain

OpenStudy (anonymous):

matt101 already did lol

OpenStudy (matt101):

Well...the answer isn't 28.8 ;)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the way matt101 explained was the same as you did or not

OpenStudy (matt101):

And by triangle I meant quadrilateral lol...oops

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is is 3.2

OpenStudy (matt101):

Yup! You end up dividing by 3, not multiplying. You can see in both cases, the long side happens to be 3x the length of the short side. The length ratio of any other pair of sides will also remain the same for the same reason.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

omg i am so sorry I was looking at a different problem

OpenStudy (anonymous):

so it is 3.2

OpenStudy (matt101):

Yes it is!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thank you
