Columbus was one of the few people who believed that the world was round. And everyone back in 1492 were trying to find different routes to get to Asia because they wanted to trade with China and India.

And since he believed that the world was round, he thought that if he travelled west of Europe, he would eventually come to Asia. But he didn't know that there was another huge continent that no one had discovered.
