Median and Mean can both be very useful in describing data sets and often both are used just for completeness. In general however, Means are used with roughly normal distributions while medians are used to better describe skewed data sets or data sets with outliers because the average value (mean) would be affected significantly by the outlier. Medians essentially ignore the outer most data
