actually I kinda fixed my thingy
apparently setting a variable to the first value in an enum list is equivalent to setting it to nothing, as when I added a placeholder to the beginning of the list, it worked

UPDATE: fixed everything there, now there's a slight issue with my pathing methods.

That seems more like checkers than chess...

uh, no. Checkers only has 2 types of pieces and you can only move diagonal.
