quick math question!!
@Loser66 please help!!
@Jhannybean help!!
Area=Length x Width Where Its length is 10 feet longer than the width Let x be the width Width=x Length = x+10
and Area is 75 ft^2, now compute everything in
Area=Length x Width Plug everything in ^
@wade123 you with me?
yes I'm trying to solve(:
Okay, take your time.
length is 42.5 and width is 32.5 ??
No. Can you type what you did so i can see the error you made?
32.5+42.5= 75 and length is longer than width by 10, how is that wrong?...
Draw a picture :)
i don't get how i am wrong :/
|dw:1428171311778:dw|
the width would be 32.5 feet,correct?
Now, we dont know the length nor the width. We only know the rectangle is 10 ft longer than width. They didnt tell us what the width is so we'll just leave that with x Also, the question says that the area is 75. We know that Area is not L+W like you try to do, it's L*W times not addition.
@Jhannybean did a great drawing. This is the visual picture of the question
oh!! sorry! wow such a bad slip up
5 and 15
You're very close.
Very, very close
what?!
width is 5, length is 15
5*15=75
15 is 10 more than 5
When you computed the area Area=Length*Width 75=(x+10)(x) 0=x^2+10x-75 And you factored those, right?
yea
i don't get how that answer could possible be wrong..
You get (x-5)(x+15) x=5 and x=\(\color{red}{-}15\)
You were right on the track, but you just skipped the negative sign But great job overall! :)
-15?...
the length is -15?how is that even possible..
When you worked it out like that , 5*15=75 That was wrong, because it doesn't give you the right answer. What if the area, not 75, let's say 24, it can factor to too many numbers. How are you supposed to know which is the right factorization without computing the area?
You didn't compute it like this. Area=Length*Width 75=(x+10)(x) 0=x^2+10x-75 You should have factored it like this because the width is not 5 it was x because we dont know what it was, the length is not 15 it was 10 longer than width (x). We found how the measurement of length times width from computing everything.
