My textbook says this:::Byzantine missionaries had a huge effect on the Slavs, the people of Eastern Europe and Russia. In the 9th century, Cyril and Methodius, two Greek monks who spoke the Slavic language, converted many people in Slavic lands to Christianity. They became known as "Apostles to the Slavs" because of their missionary work and their influence on the Slavic culture. For example, the Slavic alphabet--called the Cyrillic alphabet after Cyril and thought to be devised by Cyril and Methodius--was originally designed to translate Christian writings into Slavic languages. This alphabet is still used today for Russian, Serbian, Bulgarian, and a few other languages.
