a theme statement is a topic sentence that must express the overall meaning of your work, while also being specific enough to explain your interpretation.

it sounds more difficult than it really is. here's an example: 

let's say your book talks about how the main character can't trust his/her friends. the theme statement for that book would be "Friends are not always trustworthy."
