The Watergate scandal, which took place during the 1972 presidential campaign, was an incident when five burglars broke into the Democratic headquarters, in the Watergate building, in Washington, D.C. In 1973, President Richard Nixon's Attorney General appointed Archibald Cox to the position of special prosecutor, changed with investigating the break in. Later that year President Nixon arranged to have Mr. Cox fired, however, public outrage forced Nixon to appoint a new special prosecutor, Leon Jaworski, who was charged with conducting the Watergate investigation. In April of 1974, Jaworski obtained a subpoena, ordering President Nixon to release certain tapes and papers that related to specific meetings between the President and those indicted by the grand jury. Those tapes were believed to contain evidence that would prove that the President was involved in the Watergate break in. Hoping that Jaworski, along with the public, would be satisfied, President Nixon turned over edited* transcripts of the conversations. On July 8th, 1974 both Nixon and Jaworski appealed directly to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court resulted in a 8-0 ruling against President Nixon, despite the arguments by his attorney that Jaworski did not have enough evidence. This case is considered crucial evidence that each president should have limited power. The impact that the case has had on the United States is that it has established that the president of the United States cannot use executive privilege as an absolute defense against the judicial inquiry. Long story short, the case has proved that the president of the United States, should not, as well as could not, have unlimited power.
