first divide through by 2 because all the numbers are even
10x^2 + 2x – 8
= 2 (5x^2 + x - 4)

now to factor the expression in the parentheses you need to find 2 numbers whose product is 5*-4 (ie -20) and when added give + 1)

the factors will look like (ax + b)(x + 1)

where a and b will satisfy the above conditions
