Two cars leave town going in opposite directions. One car is traveling 65 miles per hour (mph), and the other car is traveling 50 mph. How long will it take before the cars are 575 miles apart? 4 hrs 6 hrs 2 hrs 5 hrs

iYuko (iyuko):

I think it's 5 hours

OpenStudy (dan815):

okay here is a little thought experiment that simplifies all these problems

OpenStudy (dan815):

you know how if u are in a car, and you see another car going the opposite direction, it looks like twice as fast as when u look at the car standing on the sidewalk or something

OpenStudy (anonymous):

btw, iYuko is right, but i want to see what dan is saying, it should help

OpenStudy (dan815):

In the same manner, the person in one of the cars sees himself being stable and the other car moving at a speed which is equal to his speed away + the speed of the car travelling

OpenStudy (dan815):

so (65+50) mph is the speed , its the distance being created between the 2 cars every hour 575/(65+50) = 5 hours
