The British wanted to seize ammunition and powder that the dissenting colonists were suspected of hiding, so they attempted to sneak a lightning raid (and made quite a public spectacle of it) to the northwest of Boston. The colonists found out using the Sons of Liberty's spy network, and assembled a formation on Lexington Green. The British had to go through them, and thus a battle ensued (even though its unclear who fired the first shot

Concord was a major patriot stronghold that the Brits felt threatened of. As a result of the stockpile of weapons, the brits wanted to have them destroyed
