When writing an essay and a play on the same subject, they are complete different steps. Essays can be done by building up an list and keeping on free writing on then knowing what you want to write about the most, there is no rush because you can take time on that to find the topic you like to write about the most.

When  creating an play, I suggest researching what you need out the most such as information to be able to connect to the essay and free writing any free plays, related to free writing an essay. There is no rush to that, try thinking of ideas that can fit to what you want to put in your play, and reading other plays can give you the most out of the types of different ideas.
