Is this a function?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do any of the x coordinates repeat?

OpenStudy (osanseviero):

A function is a type of relationship in which for every input, there is an out. The x coordinates are normally the input, and y is the output. So if each value of the first components of the ordered pairs is associated with only one of the second component, it is a function. if you have a (20,23) and (20, -23), it is not a function because one value of x (20) is linked with two of y.

@jim_thompson5910 @osanseviero So this IS a function?

OpenStudy (osanseviero):

Based on the things we told you before, what do you think? (it is better if you try it for yourself :) )

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Don't fish answers :P

OpenStudy (anonymous):

@osanseviero I think it is a function, I'm just trying to figure out if it is one for sure

OpenStudy (osanseviero):

You are right. Be sure to understand the concept of a function, that is the really important thing.

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

do any of the x coordinates repeat? if yes, and the y coordinates for those repeated x values are different, then you do NOT have a function if no, then you have a function

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks @jim_thompson5910 @osanseviero

jimthompson5910 (jim_thompson5910):

np

OpenStudy (osanseviero):

:) you are welcome
