Is the Dark Ages an appropriate term to describe the Middle Ages?

Although not much came out of the early Middle Ages, the people were full of life, and "the Dark Ages" does not imply that, and is not an appropriate term to describe the Middle Ages. According to the dictionary entry for the dark ages, it was a time of Intellectual Depression.
