Choose the equation of the line passing through the point (2, 6) and parallel to y = -3x - 4. y = 3x - 12 y = -3x y = -3x + 12 y = 3x
Can you eliminate any of those choices right off the bat? If so, which ones and how did you know you could get rid of them?
um i really do not know im having a hard time with this
So there are few vocab words that are really important: 1) Parallel lines 2) Equation of a line (in "y = mx + b" form) How well would you say you understand each of those?
i understand parallel lines well but not so much equation of a line
The best way to understand this is to explore it a bit on your own. Go to http://www.desmos.com/calculator and type y = mx +b then select "create slider" for m and b. Now play around with m and b and see what happens. m is the slope b is the y-intercept.
okay ill check it out so what was the answer B?
?
No, it's not that. You can use desmos to arrive at the answer by plotting the line given y = -3x-4 and plotting the point (2,6) then typing in the other lines. Whichever line goes through (2,6) and is parallel to the first line you plotted will be the correct one.
So D?
Ok, have a look at this graph: https://www.desmos.com/calculator/hlw9jnc0sz The line given in the problem is the black dotted line. We're looking for a line that goes through the point (2,6). That line must be parallel to the black dotted line. Which color line fits that description? :) https://www.desmos.com/calculator/ce7fam1vl5
Y=-3x-4
