Help with Polynomial graphing Please help

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I f I have the x intercepts 8,0 and 22,0 and 32,0 and 40,0

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and my y intercept is 0,250

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and the equations maximums and minumums are 14,200 and 26,-50 and 34, 50

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how would i do that?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

Normally you would set it up like this: y=(x-8) since you know that at x=8 the y is 0 then add other x-intercepts the same way, knowing that x=22 , x=32 and x=40 are x-intercepts. y=(x-8)(x-22)(x-32)(x-40)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how would I incoroporate all of the extra points

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how would I get the right a value?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

(continuing my post) your function is going through (0,250) - that is - the function shifted 250 units up from the origin. So, \(\large\color{black}{ \displaystyle y=(x-8)(x-22)(x-32)(x-40)\color{red}{+250} }\)

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

the right value for what ?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the A value

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

and where do this many maximum and minimum values come from? are they local max and local min ? (should be so, since there is no interval boundary)

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

well, at least the maximum approaches infinity.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

the maximums and minumums are the turning pints on the graph

OpenStudy (anonymous):

there are 4 turning points

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

yes, that is what I though... maybe we can check this function as I did it, and see how it goes.

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

I will graph what I did on desmos.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

and the domain is [0,40]

OpenStudy (anonymous):

me too

OpenStudy (anonymous):

The equation seems to go on forever though

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

oh, the domain is [0,40] we need to expand this function y=(x−8)(x−22)(x−32)(x−40) then to shift it to the y-intercept (0,250)

OpenStudy (anonymous):

wait what are the symbols you typed?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

minuses supposed to be

OpenStudy (anonymous):

heres a picture of the graph

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

kind of hard to see that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ill try to get some better light on it. one sec

OpenStudy (anonymous):

shoot it still isnt coming out clear

OpenStudy (anonymous):

can you kinda see the graph??

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

it is sideways

OpenStudy (anonymous):

yeah

OpenStudy (anonymous):

sorry about that

OpenStudy (anonymous):

OpenStudy (anonymous):

heres a better picture

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

and what do you want to know about this function ??

OpenStudy (anonymous):

How would I get the function to go through all the maximums and minimums

OpenStudy (anonymous):

I tried getting the correct a value by inserting the y intercept but didn't get me the right maximums and minimums obivously

OpenStudy (anonymous):

how would I get the equation so it would go through all the points given

OpenStudy (anonymous):

is it possible?!?

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

I was thinking about y=(x-8)(x-22)(x-32)(x-40)+225030 but I am not sure

OpenStudy (solomonzelman):

apologize

OpenStudy (anonymous):

ok thanks Im going to graph it and see how it works

OpenStudy (anonymous):

thanks so much by the way

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks I think I'm good!
