On January 1st, Jerome concocts a rumor and tells Beth. On January 2nd, they each tell a new person. By the end of January 2nd, four people have heard the rumor. On each subsequent day, each person who has heard the rumor spreads it to a new person. How many people have heard the rumor by the end of January 8th?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

It seems like the number doubles.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Once two people know it, 2 more people know it. Once 4 people know it, 4 more people know it... And so on.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yes, since this is exponential growth. :o

However, could you tell me the number for January 8th?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Num. Ppl. 1,2,4,8,16,32,64,128 Jan: 1,2,3,4,5, 6, 7, 8.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Yep. Simply set up a table for these things! Like @kaelllcox did. Good job.

Thanks you all!

OpenStudy (anonymous):

No problem. :)
