I WILL GIVE OUT MEDALS!! Mark the statement if it correctly describes the role the Christian church and monasteries had in preserving learning and spreading Christianity. A. Monks from Ireland sailed east to found monasteries in Scotland and England. B. The monks set an example of serious Christian living. C. As a rule, monasteries did not offer meals and safe lodging to travelers who were not monks. D. Monks copied texts about medicine, astronomy, and law, as well as religious works.

Please someone help me

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

I think A is right. "In the late sixth and seventh centuries a large number of monks from the Irish monasteries went to Scotland, northern England, the kingdom of the Franks, and even to Italy. The Irish monks eagerly pursued scholarship, and their monasteries became storehouses for priceless manuscripts." http://history-world.org/churchmiddleages.htm

OpenStudy (vikstar2.0):

i would say B.

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

can you choose multiple statements or only one?

OpenStudy (anonymous):

There can be more than one answer

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

okay, ignore my question then

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

I'm still looking up the rest

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay thanks

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

I can't really find that much info on the topic. I would say it's B as well, because it's kind of a given. maybe look back in your lesson? I'm so sorry I couldn't help more

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

but I'll continue to look and I'll tell you if I find something

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Okay thanks :)

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

no problem :p

I think D may be the last answer. "The most well-known preservers of texts, not only medical, would be the monasteries. The monks were able to copy and revise any medical texts that they were able to obtain. Besides documentation the Middle Ages also had one of the first well known female physicians, Hildegard of Bingen." "Texts on herbal medicine were often copied in monasteries by monks but there is substantial evidence that these monks were also practicing the texts that they were copying. These texts were progressively modified from one copy to the next, with notes and drawings added into the margins as the monks learned new things and experimented with the remedies and plants that the books supplied." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medieval_medicine_of_Western_Europe "In early manuscript culture, monks copied manuscripts by hand. They copied not just religious works, but a variety of texts including some on astronomy, herbals, and bestiaries." http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manuscript_culture I know wikipedia isn't the most reliable source, but I can't find information about the topic anywhere else.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

So A, B, and D?

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

maybe you should go back and carefully look at your text book, I'm sure it has more accurate information.

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

yeah, I'm pretty sure it's A, B and D.

OpenStudy (anonymous):

Thanks for the help! :) :D

OpenStudy (jgirl128):

no problem :)
